According to Boeing, in the next 20 years, the total air passenger traffic in South-East Asia will grow at an annual rate of 7.2%, significantly higher than the global average. But what (or rather who) ensures that every aircraft in a given fleet is airworthy and ready for flight? That’s right – CAMO Engineers, who play a crucial role in the operations of any airline. Sharing her insights from decades of experience is Lilija Boltovska, Senior Executive Group Technical Operations at Avia Solutions Group, the world’s largest ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) provider that is now hiring in the Philippines.
All aviation career paths are exciting, especially when it is you who is responsible for keeping aircraft safe and compliant with all the relevant regulations. CAMO Engineers are one of the professions that not only play a crucial role in this process but also have ample opportunities for a truly global career. In the Philippines, one of the places hiring CAMO Engineers for international operations is Avia Solutions Group Global Services Philippines in Manila.
Lilija Boltovska, who has been with the Group for over a decade, is a great example of someone whose professional journey took them from being responsible for maintaining aircraft documentation to the senior executive level, every day is full of unique and interesting challenges.
"Being a part of an ACMI airline, we don’t deal with partner carriers directly, but we are the ones ensuring that all aircraft in our fleet comply with all applicable technical and regulatory requirements at all times, and are in a safe condition and ready for operation while keeping the Certificate of Airworthiness valid," Lilija explains, describing the critical role CAMO engineers play in aviation.
Starting as a Technical Records Engineer in 2011, Lilija steadily climbed the aviation technical ladder. She moved through Technical Operations Centre Engineer roles before taking an executive position. Each step built upon the last, creating a comprehensive foundation that now serves her well in overseeing complex technical operations across the group's global network.
"Learning opportunities within such a large ACMI provider as Avia Solutions Group are basically boundless," she reflects. "Moving through different roles, I developed a deep understanding of aircraft maintenance, regulatory compliance, and safety management systems. This experience provided me the ability to oversee complex technical operations and manage large teams effectively."
However it wasn't just the technical knowledge gained through over a decade of hands-on experience that prepared her for leadership – it was the work environment itself. From coordinating Aircraft on Ground (AOG) situations as a Technical Operations Centre Engineer to performing compliance audits across multiple regulatory frameworks, there was never time to get bored. The Group promises a similar experience for CAMO Engineers at the newly established office in Manila.
Lilija’s journey hasn’t been without its turbulence, but her attitude of embracing change has helped: "Change comes into our life for a reason, and there’s always a lesson to be learnt. The greatest thing about ACMI is that it’s a dynamic field with so many opportunities for you to change, learn and grow. That is why I love what I do, and why I’d recommend this career to anyone with a background similar to mine."
With ACMI opportunities opening up in rapidly expanding markets like South-East Asia, local professionals now have the chance to experience the same kind of career path that Lilija has enjoyed.
