After nearly a decade in aviation, Jan Neumann, Business Aviation Advisor at Chapman Freeborn, has explored the industry from multiple angles. His career began early, with a school internship at an FBO in Germany. “I was immediately hooked,” he says. “That internship marked the beginning of my journey, and I’ve never looked back.”
Since then, Jan has built up experience across a range of roles, from flight operations and air ambulance services to business aviation advisory. But it was the opportunity to cross the Atlantic and start a new chapter in New York that truly pushed him beyond his comfort zone. “I was excited to gain insights into a new continent and immerse myself in a different work culture,” he says. “The opportunity to take on a new challenge in a completely different environment really inspired me.”
That excitement, however, came with its share of challenges. “The hardest part was definitely saying goodbye to my friends, family, and the fantastic team I had in Germany,” he shares. Because relocating was not just about a change of scenery but also about stepping away from his circle and the life he had built, Jan recalls preparing for a move of this scale as an emotional experience: “On a personal level, it meant letting go of many things, including my belongings and closing down my apartment, which all felt very surreal,” he says. Still, there were bright moments, such as passing on those precious items to friends and family or a farewell party organised by the Chapman Freeborn Germany team.
With strong support from colleagues on both sides of the ocean, Jan quickly settled in. “The company supported me every step of the way, whether it’s handling visa and immigration procedures or helping me find housing in New York.” He’s grateful for the backing he received throughout the process. “I’d like to sincerely thank Reto Hunziker, James Edwards, and Frank Mattern, as well as David McCown, Aniko Mersek, and Adnan Rahal, and the rest of the team for their outstanding support.”
Now, nearly a year into life in the U.S., Jan feels at home. He’s embraced the culture and pace of New York, appreciating “a strong sense of optimism and openness,” though he admits he still misses “a good German breakfast bakery in the morning.”
Professionally, the move has been a great motivator for growth. “This relocation has significantly contributed to my professional and personal development,” he says. “Moving to another continent on your own pushes you out of your comfort zone and gives you countless new perspectives.”
For anyone thinking about a similar opportunity, Jan’s advice is simple: “Do it! It’s an incredible experience that challenges and rewards you in equal measure.” And if he could speak to his younger self, just entering the world of aviation, he’d offer a few words of encouragement: “Stay curious, stay true to yourself, stay humble, and never lose sight of the passion that led you here.”
As for what lies ahead, Jan’s eyes are firmly on the future. “I’m excited to continue growing our business here in the U.S. and supporting the team with my international experience and knowledge. I see great potential and look forward to helping shape the next chapter.”
